Day Trip to Fussen, Germany

Transportation

I took the Deutsche Bahn to and from Fussen for a day trip. From the train station I took a bus to the actual castles, which wasn’t necessary but since I didn’t have much time it was the best idea. It’s also straight up hill.

Attractions

The famous Neuchwanstein and less famous Hohenschwangau castle are the main attractions in the village here. The Disney castle is based on Neuchwanstein. I paid for both tours. The Neuchwanstein tour was only an audio tour while the Hohenschwangau had an actual guide. The tours were underwhelming so I’m not sure I would spend the money again. There were also babies crying throughout the entire thing who got in for free so that kind of annoyed me as well. I still recommend going to see the castles and getting a picture from the nearby bridge because the exterior is beautiful. Make sure to purchase tickets ahead and get there early to make the most of a day trip.

What I would do differently

Since the castles are the main attraction here, I would probably not travel all the way there just to see the exterior but touring both might not have been necessary. The day trip was tight, and I didn’t get the tour time I expected even though I thought I was showing up on time.  On a busier summer day it might be difficult to do both tours as a day trip, but one is definitely doable by taking an early train and returning on the last one back, or you could just stay the night.
