Weekend in Interlaken, Switzerland

Accommodations

I stayed at Backpackers Villa Sonnenhof per my friend’s decision so I never even compared it to other hostel options, although I can say it is on par for price. The room was fine, and we were a group, so we didn’t have to share. Not the absolute best bathroom situation because it was small and shared with the floor, but you can’t really complain either. This place probably had the best hostel breakfast to date even though it was simple. For some reason the yogurt and bread + jam really hit the spot and there were always tons of it. This was a nice perk considering the price and the fact that we got up every day and did activities, so it was very convenient too.

Transportation

We took the train from Geneva which required a transfer and was expensive, but comfortable. Otherwise we walked, but the hostel did give us a voucher for the buses.

Food

  1. My Little Thai was a nice little Thai restaurant although my friends were disappointed in the drunken noodles because they weren’t like America’s. Still go here but just don’t expect things to be like America.
  2. We got Swiss Cheese Fondue, as everyone should while in Switzerland. I don’t think this place is still in business, so I won’t share it, but do your research ahead of time because the prices and quality vary.
  3. We got some food at Hooters to hold us over because it’s right in town and we thought it would be cheap. If I were alone, I wouldn’t eat here because it’s not actually cheap and you might as well just spend a few more dollars for proper food if you’re already paying that much.
  4. Berghaus at Neiderhorn is a restaurant at the top of the mountain. They have some cheap options so look if you are hungry. The food was decent.

Attractions

  1. My top recommendation is to take the cable car up to Niederhorn and take in the views. Then rent sleds and sled down the 45 minute hill. You can do it unlimited times and take the cable car back up. We came late so we only got to do the hill once, but we got a discount. You will need cash to pay, and you will have to leave a small deposit as well. This is hands down the most fun for your money in Switzerland, and maybe anywhere.
  2. Parasailing and skydiving are both popular. We did parasailing because skydiving is really expensive here. I would do parasailing since skydiving isn’t really about the views and more about the thrills.  Expect to pay at least $150 with pictures.
  3. Take time to walk around the lakes and take pictures.

What I would do differently

We really packed our days full here so there’s not much I would change, but I definitely want to go kayaking when I go back and I know there are some other adventure experiences like canyoneering and bungee jumping that could also be fun.
