Vacationing in Varna, Bulgaria

August 15, 2021

There’s a lot to explore in Bulgaria, but I won’t get to all of it on this trip. I’ve decided to head to Varna because it’s on the way to Romania, which is where I plan to fly to Barcelona from. I hope to enjoy the beach while studying for my final exam.

I have to take a local bus to Yo-Ho Hostel, but somehow make it in one piece. Immediately, this hostel is the worst I’ve ever been to. It’s dirty and not well kept. The beds are old and uncomfortable, and the bathrooms smell like they have a sewage problem. There’s also no one here for me to make friends with, so this doesn’t seem great.

I decide to go to Godzilla Beach because they’re supposed to have WiFi and it’s on the water. The food is a bit weird, but I guess that’s just Bulgaria. There’s lots of tables and the WiFi and views deliver, at least.

For breakfast I go to Donuts Club, which is just a boring donut place. Then I go to Shatra Bach Terrace near Godzilla, because I saw it yesterday and it looked nice.

Well, it’s actually the worst restaurant ever. I had a bad chicken sandwich and I sat there for two hours before someone took my order and they said “Do you want something?” as if I had just come there to loiter.

I try a coffee chop named Monte since the other places weren’t cutting it. This is a good place to work because of the outlets and WiFi but I end up at Godzilla again because I’m hungry. Godzilla is kind of like the Dumser’s of Varna.

I decide to try out Shatra beach bar, and it works out well. I stay there all day studying and taking my controls final. Afterwards, I go to Martini Drinks and Food. This place has good food but a bad location.

My Friend from Staria Chinar

For breakfast I go to 43.12 Café. This place is super trendy but the vibes and coffee are good. The food stands up to my expectations too. I love this place so much I’m sad it doesn’t have merchandise. I’d really like to buy a t-shirt from this town because it reminds me of the beach town I went to growing up. Much like Zakopane, I like it here because it’s clear that there’s mostly Bulgarian families enjoying a summer vacation. It’s not really a European thing to sell merchandise like that so I’m out of luck.

For dinner I go to Staria Chinar for something more traditional. The entrees are small and even the mashed potatoes were bad, but maybe I was just unlucky.

I lay on the beach until the sun sets and then head home.
