Swimming in a Mud Volcano in Cartagena, Colombia

Thursday, June 23, 2022

This morning I went to Época café and then went with the hostel to tour Bazurto, which is a market in Cartagena. This is not a super tourist friendly market, so go with a guide. We tried some traditional food like coconut rice, which was cool, and I met some more people from the hostel.

For dinner I went nearby to Nova Kebab and then when I came back I listened to the karaoke at the hostel bar and chatted with some friends.

Mud Volcano

Today some friends and I are going to the mud volcano. This was actually such an interesting experience because we were THE ONLY gringos on the tour. When it was our turn to go in the mud, we were forced to get massages from random men in the mud. The mud is also a super weird consistency so if you are lighter, it can be difficult to stay upright. When you get out you have to go wash off in a pond. Then we were taken to a hotel for lunch and we got to go in the ocean, which was really nice.

For dinner, the same girls and I went to Restaurante Collage which was alright, and then we went on the bar crawl led by the hostel. There were a good amount of stops and we had a lot of fun. It ended at 7 Seven Times, which everyone was talking about but I didn’t really like the techno music on the rooftop.

For breakfast I went to Cafe Lunático (which I don’t exactly recommend only because the walk was a bit scary) and then went for a haircut at Peléquería Doris. That took forever so most of the day was gone (I also missed my walking tour). Then I went to dinner at Nova Kebab and finished the night drinking beers in the hostel with friends.

I went back to Época for breakfast, and then I went to the mall (Serruela), but didn’t buy anything. I also went to Las Bolvedas which has a ton of cool souvenirs but I didn’t buy any because nothing small looked worth purchasing. For dinner I got some vegetarian tacos at Buena Vida which were delicious. I went with a new friend from Bogotá so I got some tips from him like the word for “straw” (pitillio), and how to get someone’s attention (disculpe).
