Relaxing on Costeño Beach, Colombia

Saturday, July 9, 2022

I’m spending three nights in total at Costeño Beach. This morning I got breakfast from the surf shack at the hostel, which is the only thing you pay for separately from your tab. They had homemade yogurt, so I got that and added some fruit. For lunch I had a poke bowl which was pretty good, and for dinner I had a hot dog.

Again, I’m finding it really difficult to make friends here because there’s not really organized activities, which is where I tend to meet people. I’m also not opposed to walking up to people and striking up a conversation, but I’m finding that there’s mostly Spanish speakers here or couples, or large groups of people. It’s just not really a backpacker vibe. The only people I’ve really talked to are actually the workers. Some of them speak broken English, but they’re trying to learn since there’s a lot of English spoken at the hostel. It was fun to teach each other a bit of our languages.

Loft Hammock

This morning I’m taking a walk to Bohemia Beach for breakfast. I got yogurt and fruit here too, even though I wanted to get pancakes. It was actually really good so I’m not disappointed.

Then I went back to relax in the hostel. They have a huge hut with a bar and little stage in the bottom, and there’s a loft with hammocks. I’m in love with the loft because it’s shaded and the wind from the beach makes the temperature a lot more bearable. It’s so hot here that you literally need to take a dip in the pool midday to avoid overheating. I especially love it here because you are literally at the beach, but you’re in the hostel. It can be difficult for me to enjoy the beach because I’m so pale, but this hostel solves all my problems! Well almost all…

In the evening I played cards with one of the hostel workers who I met yesterday, and a Dutch girl joined us after a while. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich for dinner (which was really good) and planned to eat it with the Dutch girl, but ended up eating with one of the owners of the hostel and a worker from Bohemia Beach (who I happened to meet this morning) as well. We had a super interesting conversation which further reinforced my observation that even though there aren’t many backpackers here, the place is still super friendly because of the staff!

The Dutch girl agreed with me that there wasn’t many backpackers in the hostel and it was difficult to meet people, so I know I’m not alone here. I’m glad we bumped into each other. If you want to make friends, you might have to go out of your comfort zone a bit here. There’s beach volleyball, ping pong, yoga, and some other activities. These are definitely not my favorites, which is why it was such a struggle. Even hanging out by the pool wasn’t very successful because there were only couples when I was there. This isn’t to discourage you from going, but just to say that it could be hit or miss if you go solo. If you’re going with a group you’ll definitely have a great time!
