Kayaking and Paddle Boarding on Bacalar Lagoon (Mexico)

Saturday, September 3, 2022

I was in the mood for breakfast food so I went to El Manati which had a nice garden in the back. It’s a cool restaurant because it has a shop inside with knick knacks. After breakfast I explored the Zócalo a bit, which is very nice. Then I relaxed in the hostel because it’s super hot during the day.

I got sushi at Nao for lunch which was pretty good! When I got back to the hostel, people were going on a sunset kayak so I joined. You have to pay a bit but you get to kayak across the lagoon with a group of people (mostly from the hostel) and then drink beers while the sun sets. I had a great time, and made a few friends.

We got back and went to Mr. Taco before heading out to Che Hostel for their anniversary party, which was really good. The Che Hostel is a really nice property, so if you want to stay in Bacalar for a while I would recommend checking it out as well as Yak and then seeing which you like better.

I needed breakfast to cure my hangover so I ended up at Ixchel. There were locals inside enjoying their Sunday morning. The food was good and the staff was nice.

For lunch I went to Mango y Chile where I got a delicious vegan burger. When I got back to the hostel, I played cards with my friends for a while before we ended up at Mr. Taco again. This time we went more out of our comfort zone to try different toppings. When we got back, we enjoyed karaoke night before going to sleep early because we planned to get up for sunrise tomorrow.

I got up super early along with my roommates for the sunrise paddle board from the rental shop at Yak. I was nervous I wouldn’t be able to stand on the board, but I quickly adjusted and ended up being pretty good. It was definitely a workout as we paddled to several places around the lagoon, taking a break for sunrise. You’re welcome to do this even if you aren’t staying at Yak, and it’s definitely a must do in Bacalar!

We were starving by the time we got back so we all headed to Mango y Chile for breakfast. They have waffles with many different toppings, which were all delicious. Then it was time for me to catch my bus, so I took a taxi from the hostel to the ADO station.

I arrived in Playa del Carmen and walked to the Che Hostel. This one isn’t as nice as the one in Bacalar but it’s still a good hostel. I’m craving sushi again so I walk down La Quinta Avenida to Sushi Roll, which is in a mall. There’s tons of options and it’s not too expensive (especially considering the location).

After exploring all of the shops on the way back to the hostel, I was ready for dinner. I went to El Fogón and got carry out because I wasn’t feeling great and my hostel room has a private balcony that seemed more pleasant to sit on than the busy restaurant. The tacos al pastor here were amazing, which I expected given the long line.
