Partying in Prague, Czechia

July 4, 2021

I have a smooth travel from Vienna to Prague, and then drag my Away Carry On to MadHouse Hostel. This hostel is super cool, as each of the rooms has a theme and murals on the walls. The dorms are split into different sections due to the architecture which is nice. The only downside is the lack of bathrooms.

I’m starving so I go to Pizza and Pasta Factory to get some work done. The pizza was alright and not too pricy, especially considering it was right on the main square.

I’m exhausted but somehow get convinced to go out to a bar with the hostel. I’m so glad I did this because it ended up being a top-tier cellar bar named Usudu. There’s lots of little rooms inside. There was some Americans in the military who I celebrated July 4th with. We met some interesting characters and played foosball as well.

The Powder Tower

As usual, I follow up my pizza day with a taco day and eat at Las Adelitas. They have good Mexican food but portions are small and it’s a bit expensive. Although, I feel as if everything in Prague is.

Next, I do my best to take a tour through all of the typical sites including Charles Bridge, the Jewish Cemetery, the Dancing House, the Memorial to the Heydrich Terror, Wenceslas Square, The Powder Tower, Old Town Square, and the Astronomical Clock. I use Rick Steves’ audio guide.

Since I had a good time last night, I decide to go out with the hostel again. We go to Café Popo Petl to pregame. There’s nothing too special about this place, but it was underground.

Then we head to the club, Chapeau Rouge. The entry fee was 100 Koruna through the hostel, but more expensive otherwise. There’s several floors with different music styles playing.

Old Town Square at Night

It’s time to get back to business before my algorithms final. There is a table to work at in the hostel but it feels like it’s in the middle of everything, and they even kicked me out early the other day. Needless to stay, I need an office here.

After some research I head to Globe Bookstore and Café hoping it will work out. It turns out to be a great workspace with delicious drinks and breakfast food and plenty of outlets. I met the owner, who was super nice and invited me to trivia. I’d really like to go but it’s right before my algorithms final so I don’t think I’ll make it.

Where there’s pizza and tacos, there’s also pho. For dinner I get Pho Vietnam Tuan&Lan. There’s literally no markings outside but an open door, and you have to go down the steps. Clearly their advertising is not working because I was the only one inside, but at least the pho is good.

Petrin Hill

I’ve heard that Chimney Cake is popular here so I find a place to try it (which is not all that difficult). It’s like an ice cream cone made from fried dough and covered in powered sugar like a Mexican churro. There’s some different variations on it, but I just try the basic vanilla one, which is delicious (although it’s definitely a portion for two).

I head across the river to the palace in order to see the Changing of the Guard. It’s not as grand as the one at Buckingham Palace, and the music is more traditional. Afterwards I head inside to see the gardens and and St. Vitus Cathedral which don’t disappoint.

I also stop by Wallenstein Palace, the John Lennon Wall, the Infant Jesus of Prague, and Petrin Hill’s lookout tower while I’m on this side of town.

For dinner, I have plans to meet up with Maria (who I met in Vienna) at Lokal, which is known as the place to go for traditional Czech food. We order several plates, which are all admittedly strange. I suggest starting with the sausage and the potato pancake with beef ragout, and then venturing out to whatever sounds good. We’re not ready to end the night so we head to Kasarna Karlin for drinks. This place is located in some sort of old military fort or something and has really cool vibes. It’s dark at night so I suggest going before sunset so you can take in the scenery. It starts pouring rain so we have to end the night a bit early.

I miss the last metro train home by seconds, so I have to figure out another way home on the night bus. I don’t have internet so at first I panic a bit, but luckily enough, I had screen-shotted a bus route home when I was researching this place. I find my way onto the night bus and make it home, although a bit wet.

I spend the day in Globe Café again working. For dinner I head to T/bistro for some pasta. They didn’t have WiFi or take card when I went so I didn’t stay long.

The day is dedicated to my algorithms final, and when I’m done it’s time for kebab. I go to Can Bey Kebab, which was exactly what I was looking for.

After a quick rest, it’s time to party. I pay for the hostel bar crawl and we stop at a few bars before ending up at Chapeau Rouge again.

Lennon Wall

It’s my last day in Prague so I try to hit up a few more attractions. I walk through Havelska Street Market, but don’t buy anything. I also stop by the Municipal House, the Franciscan Garden, and the Astronomical Clock to see the procession. I got coffee in one of the side streets near the clock and sat for a while waiting.

I venture over to Letna Park and get dessert from Café Letka. They had a “Hipster Czech cola” that was decent. I also passed Chris Hemsworth filming a movie on the way.

For dinner, I’m opting for something a bit more traditional. I order beef goulash at Restaurant Mincovna, and it’s a bit fatty but still tasty.
