Walking Around Beautiful Puebla, Mexico

Wednesday, August 10, 2022

I’ve heard some good things about a town named Puebla so today I’m taking a bus there. I go to the bus station and find my gate, and then take the hour long bus to Puebla. Upon arriving I realized it’s really less of a town and more of a city. The bus stop is also far from the center, so luckily a German girl approached me just as I was getting in my Uber and we shared it.

We were both heading to Casa Pepe Puebla. This is a really cute hostel and they gave us pulque when we arrived. We had to wait a bit for our rooms but the common area was nice. The beds are private and the bathrooms are good as well. This would be a nice hostel to work from because there’s lots of space and it’s peaceful.

Afterwards, I walked to the Zócalo and explored a bit, and then I stopped at Tacos la Rana for tacos al pastor which were some of the best. I explored a bit more and then I went to Entre Tierra for dinner. I read that this place is nice but I was the only one in there (maybe because it’s Wednesday). The food was good and the ambience was really nice. My only complaint might be that the portions were small.

I already have to leave Puebla because I’m on a tight schedule, but I wish I could stay longer. It’s beautiful and it’s a college town so the vibes are good. This morning I’m taking the walking tour of the town starting at the Zócalo.

The walking tour in Puebla is really great. You get to see the Barrio las Artistas, El Parian market, and Calle de los Dulces (where we tried a sunflower cookie which was really tasty). Unfortunately, however, the tour started late and the tour guide took a really long time, so I started to have a problem. I didn’t eat before the tour and I need to catch my bus.

Apparently this area is famous for Chilli de Nogada, a dessert that is supposed to represent Mexico. I need food before my long bus ride so I go to a recommended restaurant and order it. I’m not a huge fan because there’s just too many flavors in one dish, which I find with a lot of the dishes here.

Then I go back to Casa Pepe and grab my stuff, and call an Uber to the bus station.  It turns out I missed my bus, which sucks. The lady only makes me pay half the fare for the rescheduled bus at least, but it was expensive so I’m still annoyed.

After the long bus ride, I arrive in Oaxaca. I catch a taxi outside the station to Casa Angel. Immediately upon entering I like this place. I can hear people socializing on the rooftop and it feels friendly enough that I can just approach anyone. The bathrooms are not the best (or the worst), but everything else is great. They have a bar upstairs, and a kitchen that serves breakfast. The dorm I’m in has nice beds that are private and roomy lockers.

I head out to Gourmet Delicatessen, where I get gazpacho and a grilled cheese because I was craving it. The gazpacho was good but I wish it was tomato soup. Oaxaca is supposed to be the food capital of Mexico and so far it stands up.
